All You Need to Know About Engaging Instagram Carousels

Instagram carousel posts are one of the most engaging formats brands can use on the platform. On average, their carousel posts get 3.1x more engagement and 1.4x more reach than regular posts on Instagram. The trick to swipe left, it seems, is hard to resist—mainly when there’s a persuasive cover slide. Let your followers stop doom scrolling and start swoon scrolling with thumb-stopping carousel posts.

What is an Instagram carousel post?

A Canva Instagram carousel is a feed post with up to 10 photos or videos that can be viewed by swiping left. Like any other Instagram post, you can have a caption, alt-image text, a geo-tag, and account and product tags on each image in your carousel. People can like, share and comment on your carousel post.

A small square icon emerges in the post’s upper right corner when a carousel is published. As someone flips to the second image, the icon is replaced with a counter that shows the number of frames. Small dots also emerge at the bottom of a post to mark improvement through the carousel.

The Advantages of Instagram Carousel Posts

Including more photos or videos in a single post improves your chances of generating a high engagement rate — but that’s not the only reason you should make carousels part of your Instagram marketing plan.

Posting an engaging Canva Instagram carousel can help you get on the Instagram algorithm’s good side. Because of the interactive feature of carousels, users spend more time looking at them, on average, than they do at traditional Instagram feed posts. This enables the algorithm to know that your target audience discovers your content exciting and valuable, leading to more people visiting your posts in their feeds.

Carousels are also significant for easily sharing:

  • close-ups and different angles of a product
  • before and after transformations
  • how-tos and step-by-step guides

How to Create an Instagram Carousel Post

  • Add all relevant pictures to your photo library.
  • Open the Instagram app and click the + icon from the navigation bar.
  • Tap the layered square icon just below the post preview.
  • Choose up to 10 photos and videos from your photo library. The order in which you choose the media files is the order in which they will be arranged in your carousel.
  • Tap Next in the top right corner of the screen.
  • Apply filters to all of your photos/videos or edit each of them individually by tapping the icon with two overlapping circles. When you’re done with your edits, tap Next.
  • Add your caption, account tags, geo-tag, and hashtags.
  • Tap Share.

Double-check to make sure your frames are in the correct order before publishing. You can’t reorder the slides after sharing.
